SOUTH of the Border, Vol. 2, follows Lyndon Wake, Andrew Cotton and Tom Butler during a very average month of surf in Ireland. Following an enthusiastic start to the winter, January in the Atlantic was akin to having your house take over by manic depressives who insist on watching the same TV show on repeat. A reminder, if ever one were needed, that winter here is a fickle and tempestuous mistress. "January what a weird little month she was." Said Lyndon "A month of untold amounts of driving, including a 28 hour trip round Ireland just to get to County Clare due to Cotty's van breaking down. Bad tides plagued us, we missed numerous great conditions with the the surf firing in the dark. "In some ways it was quite nice to explore the bad side of a winter in Ireland rather than it being on fire the whole time. Saying of the month was 'you're damned if you do and damned if don't."

A Planning Application has been submitted to the North Devon District Council to demolish Baggy's Too (Atlantis Lodge) by our Landlords and build a Massive Hotel, Restaurant, Bar and Spa.

We are requesting that everybody that loves Baggy Point objects to the North Devon District Council (NDDC) Outline Planning Application No 52032 to Demolition the Existing Victorian Guest House at Atlantis Lodge, Croyde Bay, EX33 1PA and Construct a Hotel, Restaurant, Bar and Spa.

We implore you to do this before 10^th June 2011, which is the closing date for public comments, as we belief this proposal will be a monstrosity that will be a major blot on the landscape in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and prevent the general public from viewing the sea or beach whilst walking up this section of the South West Coastal Path. It will also be present visual impairment within the ANOB from any position within Croyde Bay. As far as Baggy Lodge is concerned (our original place which we will move back to next year) it will block nearly all of the views to the sea beach and the bay.

The proposed build is several times the foot print and volume of existing structure which can only be considered as a new facility for tourism which is strictly forbidden within the Local Area Plan.

The traffic generated by the proposal will turn this quaint hamlet into a busy traffic jam deterring walkers from using this section of the South West Coastal Path. Furthermore, the proposal only makes provision for the parking of a limited number of standard size cars and none for larger 4x4 vehicles. As there is no other local parking through the quiet hours and this is bound to generate a vast amount of inappropriate and unsafe parking on private land and the access road to the Baggy Point properties. General access to the local properties will also be severely hindered by the queue of cars wishing to park at the hotel and awaiting access to the single lift and canter-lever parking arrangement proposed blocking the narrow single lane private access road. There are no passing points on this road within 100 meters of the access to the proposed development.

Croyde prides itself on being a charming Devon Village with a established holidaying and surf beach. This proposal does not fit into this character and will attract a new type of visitor form the wealthier section of the populous, who are unlikely to use the established local businesses. Staff for this type of hotel is traditional source from overseas personnel and is unlikely to help local employment.

We implore you to insist that the NDDC Planning Committee refuse this outline planning application and encourage the applicant to propose a more sympathetic use of this property in keeping with the established Character of Croyde and the surrounding area.

New Lambs for 2011

The first of our new lambs arrived on Monday 21 Mar 11 (10 days earlier than expected!). We are expecing around 20 in total, but for now the first three can be seen with their Mums in the Cafe garden (the one with the horns and four legs - same hair style though). Please come and visit them soon. They will be there all over Easter.

BAGGY LODGE OPEN FOR 2011 SEASON
Great News! Baggy Lodge is open for 2011 with a new menu and the same great location. We have 3 double rooms this year (two with an additional single bed) and now 22 bunk bed spaces.

As well as good reasonable priced food and rooms with the most stunning views in Croyde, we are also offering full surf equipment hire, surf leasons, coastering and climbing.

In addition to our usual instructors we are offering speacialist tuition from our own Sponsored Surf Team lead by Lyndon Wake. Lyndon and the rest of his team are all Profession Surfers who partake in the major UK and European events and you can often see them in the surf mags and press. Come and get some top tips from the experts.

Baggy Lodge Update

Good news, Baggy Lodge is no longer covered in scaffolding. As you can see from the image the building externally is looking fantastic.

Inside the building some of the rooms will be habitable soon.

But don't fear we have plenty of space for accommodation at Baggys Too with a wonderful cafe overlooking Croyed beach.

Our lucky winnners have won a boat trip on the 100ft sailing vessel ‘Indo Jiwa’ through the Hinako Islands ( North West of Nias, Indonesia ), a group of eight pristine tropical Islands, rarely visited by foreigners.
The competition was organised in order to raise the profile of the organisation ‘Holidays with Purpose’, which aims to combine an amazing surf boat trip experience, whilst also putting something back into the local community. The winners will join a party travelling to Indonesia on 10th November and returning on 24th November.

The trip is designed to give them a unique experience to become part of a village community, not simply as a tourist observing but as a member. Each day you they will have the opportunity to surf some amazing breaks on off shore islands, dive, snorkel, and fish, then put something back to the community by going onshore to work on one of the numerous projects which ‘Holidays with Purpose’ have set up. These include teaching youngsters to surf, hosting children’s activities, teaching English, building projects or getting involved in kick starting a micro business aimed at giving long term sustainability.
In the evening they will return to the boat for a delicious meal and retire for the night in air conditioned comfort.

We are pleased to announce our new Yoga Retreats!

We have now arranged our first 4 day yoga retreat here at Baggy's. The dates run from Sunday 1st to Thursday 5th November 2009.

The retreat will be run by Philip Flitman has been working for 15 years as a Yoga teacher and therapist.

This fantastic Yoga holiday will include accommodation and meals, as well as 2 daily yoga sessions, classes in inspired writing and some time to just relax and enjoy the local landscape & hospitality

Goldcoast is over & the heatwave has arrived

Another Gold Coast has been and gone and order can be restored to the lodge once more. That's another good feature of the lodge when it is the Ocean fest you can literally walk five minuets down the road and arrive at one of the best water and extreme sport music festival in the country. It is so close in fact that you can sit in our gardens and listen to the music it is almost as good as being their.

This week is going to give us some great weather which always seems to transform the bay into a totally different experience. Because we are located in such a quite area it does feel like you are in a different part of the world when the weather picks up. It's like life slows down and you are able to enjoy the simple things. Going down to the beach and letting the sun and the waves give you that feeling of calm that every now and then is just what you need. If you have never encountered Croyde in the summer than you should add it to your list of things you really need to do.

Baggy's now fully open

Baggy's is now fully re-open once more so there is no excuse to not come down and take advantage of the beautiful sunshine and cranking surf.

The cafe has also been re-opened if you want a spot of lunch or just need somewhere to relax and take in the amazing view of Croyde beach.

We have a wide variety of surfing equipment for hire starting for those of you who are beginners to the more experienced surfer. So everyone can encounter some of the best surf in the country.

Baggy's is perfect if you looking to have some fun on a surfing weekend or fancy a laid back time away from the regular stresses of everyday life. We can cater for pretty much anything you have in mind with our bigger range of accommodation and facilities.

So what are you waiting for come to Croyde and visit the new and improved lodge with the same laid back and relaxed atmosphere but with a fresh exterior.

Baggy's gets bigger and better

Baggy's Surf Lodge & Cafe will be bigger and better for 2009 and will also offer Surf Equipment Hire.

Just for 2009 we have taken over Atlantis Lodge and Polly's Cafe (as was) and will be operating both sides of the road as Baggy Lodge.

Baggy's Surf Cafe will operate out of where Polly's used to be and we are offering accommodation both sides of the road. Atlantis Lodge and Polly's will not be as they were, but will have a Baggy's makeover to bring across the casual surf image that you are used to at Baggy's.

We are now offering 4 Double Rooms, 26 Bunks and 7 Single Beds, We will still have the Cafe to chill out in the evening and also a guest lounge with TV games and the most awesome sea views. Most of the new rooms have the same great sea views too.

Equipment Hire - We are also now offering a large range of Surf Equipment for hire including BIC G Boards (soft top) for those with less experience, a range of long and short board BIC EComp Epoxy boards, Alder Body Boards and a full size range of Alder 4/3 Stealth wetsuits (as well as boots, gloves and hoods for those wintry days).
